生于加拿大的艾伯塔，成长于洛杉矶。1923年从影，1928年主演《婚礼进行曲》，声名远播。1933年出演科幻片《金刚》，令人难以忘怀。1942年和剧作家罗伯特．里斯金结婚后一度退出影坛，直至1953年才再度复出，5年后最终息影。90年代后期曾在电视剧中出演角色。其它主要影片有《战地飞鸿》、《绿林豪客》、《恐怖窟》、《蜡像陈列所之秘密》、《大破间谍网》、《蜂后》等。
