早年经历
在拳台上，他通常一边忍受着对方暴雨般的重拳，一边调整自己的状态，用右直拳给对手以猛烈的反击，每逢这个时刻便令拳迷为之倾倒，他的名气也因此大增。另外由于他相貌英俊，总是博得靓女的青睐，他比赛时常常对女拳迷暗送秋波而分散了注意力。他还把大量时间花在社交和与女性的交往中且通宵达旦，这在某种程度上断送了他的美好前程。自输给布拉道克后，他再也没有获得重新挑战的机会。

演艺经历
1933年曾应米高梅影片公司邀请，和女演员茂娜·洛埃合演故事片《果然夺得锦标归》。
第二次世界大战期间他演过两部影片，战后又主演过几部。在此后的二十多年中，他相继演出《海烟出力》（1942年）、《夫人的日子》（1943年）、《小兵返家》等几部影片。
个人生活
他的弟弟巴迪·贝尔曾在《你往何处去》（1951年）等影片中扮演巨人。他的儿子小马克斯·贝尔也曾参加过电视系列片和电影的演出。
