在台湾长大。
六岁进复兴剧校习艺，学了八年，成为十大武旦之首。
1970年赴港加入嘉禾公司成为基本演员，首作为《天龙八将》。
1972年以《铁掌旋风腿》闻名。同时，又勤练合气道，为黑带三段高手。

电影剧照
茅瑛的影坛生涯还是比较精彩的，影视生命力主要活跃于20世纪70年代至80年代，虽然时间相比不是很长,但仍表现不俗。
敬业的她拍摄前受香港制片商的需要她就去韩国学习合气道，后来因此还学习了一些其他的武艺，82年退出影坛，因为当时已经是男特技演员的天下了，但女性武打姿势毕竟还是更曼妙，更能吸引观众。这时新的女性演员出现了，那就是更具实战特点、更漂亮的杨紫琼、罗芙洛、杨丽菁等人。其后茅瑛复出影坛，但动作不大，同其他正当红的男女武打影星合作了几次，尔后便逐渐淡出影坛。此后为纪念功夫皇帝李小龙而参与拍摄了几部纪录片。
