温斯顿·格鲁姆出生在华盛顿特区，后在阿拉巴马州的鲍德温县进入大学军事学校（现称UMS-怀特预备学校）。温斯顿最初希望像他父亲那样成为一位出色的律师，但大学期间的文学编辑经历最终让他成为一名作家。后进入阿拉巴马大学，于1965年毕业，1965年至1969年期间参加越南战争。

越南战争回国后，格鲁姆成为华盛顿星报的一名记者，这份报纸长于政论及社会新闻报道，在特区具有很大的影响力，32岁从报社辞职成为专职作家，第一本小说BetterTimesThanThese在1978年出版。讲述一群爱国的越战美军的战争故事，他的第二部小说AsSummersDie（1980）收到了较好的认可。

2011年11月，格鲁姆带来了他的最新著作《美国西部史：1846-1847》，讲述了美国西部拓荒时期的冒险与动人的岁月。

1985年搬回阿拉巴马州，在那里写下了一本后来风靡全球的作品《阿甘正传》。1986年出版时，并没有使格鲁姆成为一位畅销书小说家，直到1994年这部小说被改编成同名电影，由汤姆汉克斯担任主角，本片推动了小说的畅销书地位。
