Indigenous descent Knowlton né Claude Lacasse in Rimouski, Québec, Canada; close to the Montagnais (métis) reserve in Ashini, Quebec, where his great-grandparents lived. At age two, his parents moved to Sherbrooke, Québec. Knowlton quickly joined the local choir at St-Boniface's church singing weekly in Latin, French and English.
