1954年，萨姆·尼尔随家人回到新西兰的南岛并在寄宿学校接受教育，先后在坎特伯雷和维多莉亚大学学习，拿到了新西兰坎特伯雷大学英国文学学士学位；
1976年，萨姆·尼尔毕业后随“五人巡回剧团”做了一年表演。70年代初往影坛发展，在新西兰国家电影部担任过六年的电影导演、编辑和编剧 ；
1977年，萨姆·尼尔出演第一部电影作品《睡狗》（SleepingDogs）角色；
1993年，萨姆·尼尔出演其成名作《侏罗纪公园》 中阿兰·格兰特博士一角；
1999年，萨姆·尼尔出演《机器管家》
2001年，萨姆·尼尔再度出演《侏罗纪公园3》中阿兰·格兰特博士角色 。
从业经历堕落天使
他最为人熟悉角色的则是在1993年上映的《侏罗纪公园》中扮演的科学家角色。
1979年在成名作《我的璀璨生涯》推出后，1981年他获好莱坞赏识，得到演出国际大片之机会。在英国发展期间，曾当选1983年英国电视最佳男演员。1992年随着《侏罗纪公园》卖座及《钢琴师和她的情人》扬威戛纳，使他的声势也跟着水涨船高。2001年他再度以同一角色演出《侏罗纪公园3》 。
2016年，萨姆·尼尔确认加盟漫威电影《雷神3：诸神黄昏》 。
