他曾为电视剧《成了一名总统》配乐而获得埃米奖，因《金臂人》(1956)、《七武士》(1960，又译《七侠荡寇志》)、《夏季和烟雾》(1961)、《独眼龙双枪歼四虎》(1969)、《黄金》(1974)等片歌曲谱写，获得过十次以上奥斯卡金像奖提名。1967年，他以《非常摩登的米利》获得第四十届奥斯卡最佳音乐配乐金像奖。此外，他还因1962年的《梅岗城的故事》和1966年的《夏威夷》两片获得好莱坞外国新闻记者协会授予的最佳电影配乐金球奖。
