演艺生涯，可说是一帆风顺。上初中时的陈美龄就非常喜欢参加各种义务活动，一把吉它常常陪在她的身边。陈美龄十四岁(1971年)时，偶然的机会她和大姐陈依龄一起录制美国歌手JoniMitchell原唱的“TheCircleGame”，结果大受香港群众的欢迎。
受日本著名歌手、作曲家平尾昌晃邀请，她于1972年赴日灌录“虞美人花”开始在日本演出迷上很多日本青少年了。1973年以“草原光辉”一首歌得到日本唱片奖新人奖，以她的清澈高声和可爱的外表和刚刚学起的有趣日语表现，成为风靡一时的人气偶像。1977年主演爱情电影《我在恋爱》。
在日本进入陈美龄很好学，唱歌并没有影响她深造学习。上智大学国际学系学习后不久，她听从父亲的意见，突然表示暂时退出娱乐界，赴加拿大多伦多大学留学学习社会儿童心理学。1978年毕业后，再次赴日并重新进入娱乐界。
1979年在香港发表首张粤语唱片《雨中康乃馨》。
1984年应征写一篇纪念国际青年年的和平论文《以歌声呼吁和平》，得到特别奖。同年首次回到母亲的故乡贵州省贵定县。1985年她在北京首都体育馆吸引5万4千听众，为宋庆龄基金会义演，这成为她在中国的首次演唱会。同年为日本电视台慈善节目《24小时电视》，陈美龄赴干旱和饥饿状态的衣索比亚进行采访活动。通过这些慈善活动，在忙于演唱活动的业余，重新开始搞义务活动了
