1934年2月2日出生于世界闻名的海滩胜地费古埃拉达佛斯，15岁时迁居里斯本。1963年在伦敦技术学校学习电影，并在1965年开始其第一部电影，直到5年后完成。改编自葡萄牙短篇小说的“Silvestre”入选了威尼斯电影节。1989的《黄色房子的回忆》（SouvenirsfromtheYellowHouse）获得了银狮奖。1995的作品《上帝的喜剧》（God'sComedy）也参加了威尼斯电影节并获评审团特别奖。他所有的电影以煽动性为主要特征。2003年2月3日在里斯本去世，《来与去》成为他最后一部作品。
