早年经历
哈罗德·阿伦，生于纽约州布法罗，原名海曼·阿尔勒克，父亲是教堂歌唱班领唱人，他小时候就跟父亲在犹太教堂中学唱。十五岁加入三人合唱组，弹奏钢琴。1927年赴纽约当钢琴教师、歌唱员。
演艺经历
1928年开始创作歌曲。
百老汇的歌舞剧如《厄尔·卡罗尔杂耍剧》、《生活开始于八十三十分》等，均由他作曲。他的歌曲很大程度上受美国黑人爵士乐和勃鲁斯的民歌影响，旋律优美，节奏明快。他创作的歌曲中最著名的是影片《绿野仙踪》(1939)一片里的插曲《彩虹曲》和《我们赶去看女巫》。《彩虹曲》还获得当年奥斯卡最佳歌曲金像奖。他为《蓝色夜晚》(1911)、《军中春色》(1944)等众多影片谱写的主题歌或插曲，也都获得奥斯卡最佳歌曲金像奖的提名。他的歌曲由著名歌唱明星裘蒂·伽伦、平·克劳斯贝、弗雷德·阿斯坦、黛娜·肖、蓓蒂·葛兰宝、汤尼·马丁等在银幕上歌唱，并制作成唱片，在三、四十年代甚为流行。
