早年经历
蒂尔·施威格出生于德国弗莱堡，是三兄弟中的老二，他的父亲赫伯特·施威格是高中老师，母亲曾是一个历史老师。大学毕业后，他开始服兵役，被派驻的地区包括荷兰。在此期间，施威格出于真正的良心而拒服兵役，并在一个医院做起社区服务工作。然后，他开始学习德语，打算成为一名教师，但是同样没能成功。
1986年，施威格开始在科隆剧院的地下室戏剧学校上表演课，顺利完成学业。在1989年，他在波恩受聘于魂斗罗-克瑞斯剧院。施威格的职业生涯以作为色情电影的幕后配音演员开始。
演艺经历
1996年，他与好友合组Mr.BrownEntertainment公司（名称源自昆丁塔伦提诺处女作《横行霸道》里的主角名），致力于拍摄以普罗大众为对象的商业电影，创业作《敲开天国之门》即惊人地刷新开票纪录。
1998年，由他导演的处女作《暗战北极熊》，则让人见识到他行云流水般的执导功力。2005年的《赤足情缘》，则被视为是他公司‘Mr.BrownEntertainment’创业以来的首座里程碑，不仅票房亮眼、影评赞赏，版权甚至还远销到美国，成功打响了提尔史威格的名声。
《没有耳朵的兔子2》德文片名原意「两只耳朵的小鸡」，在片中意指「有心，爱情就能成真」，为所有深陷爱情困境的男女，提供了打破僵局的最好解答。《没有耳朵的兔子2》2009年底在德国上映时，首周即挤下好莱坞钜片《暮光之城：新月》登上了冠军宝座，单单周末两天票房就疯狂吸金三亿台币，创下了提尔史威格从影以来的最佳成绩。
