印象比较深的几个镜头, 大多是关于战后大选时期的Churchill. 在等待选举结果的时候, 他的夫人要他去参加一个乡间party, 结果这个出身贵族, 恐怕本身自动和平民隔离的老小孩十分气恼, 直接冲她夫人吼: I hope you did not accept the invitation. 问题来了: democratic regime下的政客都得取悦选民的, 尤其是占人口多数的working class. 受过良好教育,出身高贵但眼睛长在头顶上的"清高型贵族"显然不受欢迎. 问题是...如果最后选出来的都是选民爱听什么就说什么的politician, is it really good for the country as a whole?
话说之所以Churchill could be called a statesman rather than merely a politician, 也是因为他的那种不随意取悦选民的个性. 觉得social welfare state和evil communism看齐, 就直接说出来. 对错姑且不论, 成为statesman的先决条件, 至少是这个人得truly believe in something and have the determination to carry out policy initiatives under the political ideology he or she believes in.
里面幽默场景不少. 比如这老小孩执意要go with the invading forces to France on D-day. 结果国王只能亲自出马, 说自己也要去. 然后委婉劝Churchill: If I am killed, I still have a replacement. You do not. 当时看到这里差点一口茶喷出来.
